Episode 16 of the Nature of Meditation podcast explores Clarity in Meditation.
It describes the ‘method of no method’ in Chan Buddhism, called Shikantaza in Zen Buddhism and ‘Settling the mind in its natural state’ in Tibetan Buddhism. All these meditation practices refer to having a selfless non-attached mind with a still awareness.
‘Just sitting’ or ‘just experiencing’ is avoiding chasing and grasping meditation experience. Instead, you just experience each momentary phenomena as it is, without evaluating, judging, avoiding, denying or trying to manipulate what is happening. It is through selflessness and non-attachment that clear mind emerges. The episode also explains the metaphor of The Clean Window and the Clean Window Trap, as no-self doesn’t need clarity.
